Review: Enterprise guide to Windows 10

Windows 10 is now available for consumers, but for IT executives thinking about enterprise deployments, here’s what the upgrade path from Window 7 or Windows 8/8.1 looks like.

The first step is to launch pilot projects this summer. For power users or bleeding edge companies that don’t want to wait for the full complement of Windows 10 enterprise features, there will be a fall release of Windows 10 Enterprise and Professional Editions.

If you’re waiting for the full-featured version, we’re talking fourth quarter of this year. And if you’re like many enterprises and typically wait until after the first patches and updates, then you’re looking at the first quarter of next year.

This review covers Windows 10 Professional, Enterprise and Educational versions. The Educational edition is much like an “Ultimate” release, with all of the features of the Enterprise Edition in a single user-form.

For IT execs, the two big questions are whether a migration to Windows 10 will break anything and whether it has enough new features to make a migration worthwhile.
Installation

We installed Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise on a number of different installations, ranging from Windows 7 through 8.1 either as in-place upgrades to bare metal installations or upgrades to VMs. We found that there can be problems if your infrastructure isn’t currently rock-solid. If there are current activation problems (usually found on BYOD devices), then you can’t upgrade.

Strong pilot tests in an organization’s sample of platforms — especially hosting platforms such as Citrix XenServer upgrade hosts, VMware Horizon View upgraded hosts, and HTML5 remote consoles is strongly suggested prior to an organizational rollout.

One potential problem centers around the browser. If you must use prior editions of Internet Explorer for captive corporate apps, stop here, and do not upgrade as IE11 is mandated — and the newly added Edge browser, while lovely and fast, is unlikely to suit you and is devoid of plug-ins at this time.

For many, IE11 use is not a problem, but for a handful of organizations with wide-spread IEX apps, changes are needed and piloting IE11 is recommended. Keep in mind that for all Windows 10 Versions, there is no backgrade/uninstall.

If you're using the Professonal Edition, Microsoft’s push of fixes, which can include default device drivers, could break user installations. That’s why we recommend the Enterprise Version, which gives IT control over updates.

Otherwise, you need to trust Microsoft’s ability to prevent large swaths of scorched PCs. Updates are already out for all versions of Windows 10, and instead of a “Patch Tuesday”, they’ll arrive quickly.
New features

Windows 10 is mated to Active Directory in the same old ways — but with new client-side twists, we found in testing. No new roadblock or obstacles towards interoperability with MacOS or Linux have been introduced. Even your VMs can be updated with surprisingly little drama or inconvenience, whether on Citrix Xen, Hyper-V, or VMware. We could not find any difficulties with mating Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise with our two Active Directory sources, and so feel this is another green light.

Microsoft introduces significant business-focused security features, better encryption of data in-place as well as in transit, and adds Microsoft’s Azure Active Directory as a member of its Windows as a Service “team”.
Resources

Group Policy Objects that work for Windows 7 and 8 clients appear to work for Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise. Microsoft is in the process of adding specific templates for features found in Windows 10 business editions and will be added server-side, rather than client side for group rather than local control.

Cortana is Microsoft’s audio query tool, and it’s good. Voice commands get fast answers. Permitting Cortana adds voice interaction, and additionally creates sources of asked/answered data profiles somewhere managed by somebody. The actual privacy of these is unknown, as is whether they can be mined, or must be in some way audited or are in other ways regulated.

The use of Siri is uncontroversial for many organizations, but such voice queries can be business or personally related, and this is new ground to break in terms of legal discovery processes, international regulatory authority, and policy determination. Organizations need to decide the practicality of permitting Cortana.

Windows 10 includes constant updating, an approachable, more Windows-like UI (than Windows 8), and the promise of a cross-device operability. If Windows 8 was about tablets, Windows 10 is about PowerUsers, a Microsoft spokesperson told us.

Users are unlikely to be dismayed by Windows 10 combination of tiling and Start Menu. Windows 10 will also remember Wi-Fi passwords. As we don’t recommend browser password cache in IE, we didn’t test this function. Firefox, Google Chrome, and other browsers we tested work unaided.

Then, there is the question of utilization of the Microsoft Store, and its business store variants (yes, you can arrange your own groupings of apps and make it an authorized store for users).

Rapid self-provisioning of licensed/approved/vetted apps is heaven-sent to many organizations, but specific licensing details, approved payloads, metadata in the form of ancilliary data files, organizational templates, and other customizations require time and the usual licensing, legal, audit controls, language-specific choices.

Microsoft can make use of TPM 2.0 platforms, an onboard encryption system and extends UEFI Secure Boot security potential. The Trusted Platform Module 2.0 secure boot feature can also be used in conjunction with UEFI and Microsoft’s Hyper-V, where hardware supports all three, to also enable Virtual Secure Mode. This scheme is an application sandboxing method that’s lighter-weight than running a full VM on a Windows 10 host, much like other container methods we’ve seen, but not really similar to Docker or Kubernetes.

Because Windows 10 clients cannot run Hyper-V when they’re already hypervised, features using Hyper-V run only on bare metal or adjunct where Hyper-V is native. You can’t spawn this, therefore, in virtualized sessions of Windows 10 to sandbox applications.

UEFI Secure boot support helps prevent boot-time malware and viruses from changing kernels, or otherwise infecting them, although it’s the source of criticism from other OS vendors and their fans. For some hosts, it requires BIOS selection changes best not left to civilian users, but we recommend using UEFI for its protection. TPM BIOS settings had to be cleared to make TPM and TPM-related apps work in test versions of Windows 10, but we didn’t have a problem with it in the RTM-and-first-patched version we used.

+ ALSO ON NETWORK WORLD How to get the most out of Windows 10 enterprise security features +

Microsoft will also allow third party application direct VPN connections, rather than creating a host-level circuit between hosts. This means that several secure circuits can be managed without user intervention, or exposing two networks to each other without safeguards. This wasn’t tested because it’s new and applications using this technique could not be found at press time.

To achieve an additional sense of security, Microsoft has changed how applications can work securely, although some of the big changes — policy-driven changes towards dividing business and personal apps and data — won’t appear until the fall update.

This said, Windows 10 is ready to be managed under the MDM constraints of Microsoft’s InTune skills today; we tested basic functionality and it works.
Versions: Pick The Enterprise Edition

The Business Editions are limited. There are three salient business versions, culminating with an Education version that is perhaps the equivalent of prior Windows “Ultimate” editions.

Choosing Enterprise over Professional Editions gives IT and organizations more flexibility and choice:

Updates/patches/fixes can be controlled in terms of time and payload with The Enterprise Edition.
Windows 10 Enterprise makes use of several security features, including Windows Credential Guard and Windows Device Guard.
Enterprise has the Long Term Service Branch, currently five years plus five years extended.
    Use of UEFI Extended Services.

Professional Edition gets updates for as long as the device exists, but it can’t be meaningfully transferred to another device and receive updates. Professional Edition gets its updates and payloads from Microsoft using push-methods.

Professional updates therefore create a periodic event, and organizations might not be able to dependency-check updates prior to delivery, this potentially rendering apps/updates/patches/fixes that might break things, where Enterprise licensees of organizations (perhaps not individual Enterprise licensees) can pilot, then roll-out organizationally-vetted packages under their own auspices when distribution makes sense, perhaps with organizational credentials signing.
Caveats and summary

Windows 10 has plenty of eye candy and is approachable for users. Some already have the nagware compelling them to upgrade. Long time Windows followers warn to not do this until the first set of patches and fixes arrive, and we agree. For pioneers, self-supporting power users, and test personnel, the time is ripe.

The fall update will enable both patches and fixes but also a new set of untested features, so for some organizations, this is a four-step rollout, pilot, first-update, data-protection features pilot, and data protection features roll out.

Backwards and broad compatibility to Windows 7 helps Microsoft, instead of hindering it, this round. Much attention has been paid to homogenizing and paying attention to the needs of Microsoft’s elite flyers. They’re unlikely to upgrade immediately, yet have compelling reasons to do so in the fall.
How We Tested Windows 10

We used six different desktops and notebooks, and five new or upgraded test VMs to upgrade or bare-metal install Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise updated RTM builds. Notebooks included Lenovo and Samsung models, E-Fun Nextbook and Microsoft Surface 2 tablets, and two HP all-in-one desktops. None were rejected by the upgrade applications, although we encountered a few head-scratchers relating to processor rejection messages.

In place upgrades of VMs from Windows 7 or 8.1 were unremarkable, save the speed of update was faster, owing to the base platform resources of the VMs. Hyper-V3, VMWare ESXi 5.5, and Parallels for Mac were used to test VM upgrades.

We tested IE11 vs Edge on all of the desktops we generated, and did not use extensive or weird connected devices to test USB/peripheral device identification. However, all appropriate machines easily discovered our Epson WF-2530 Wi-Fi Printer, and loaded its drivers satisfactorily. Upgrades ranged from 14 minutes on bare metal hardware (Lenovo notebook with minimal installation and Core i5 CPU) to 41 minutes (Nextbook table with quad-core Atom CPU and SSD over IEEE 802.11g Wi-Fi).

These were tested with our local Active Directory Network, and our broadband VPN-connected branch network into our NOC at Expedient in Carmel, Ind.

Windows 10 Enterprise edition: What are the key features for businesses?

The Enterprise version of Windows 10 is now available, offering the prospect of new features that Microsoft says will help with security and management of PCs and mobiles.

While businesses tend to lag far behind consumers when it comes to updating their machines, some analysts are already seeing Volume Licensing customers express interest in upgrading from earlier versions of Windows.

"What we've been a little surprised at is how aggressive a lot of our customer base is towards Windows 10," Stephen Kleynhans, research VP with analyst house Gartner, said.

"There are a lot of customers who are coming to us and saying, 'We'd like to move in early 2016'.

"They're interested in going ahead with Windows 10 in much bigger numbers than we saw with Windows 7 six years ago, which has been a bit of a surprise for us."

That eagerness to migrate can, in Kleynhans' view, partly be put down to the stress organisations went through in moving from Windows XP when support ended last year.

"They ended up having to do a lot of work very quickly, really under the gun. That's always expensive - and when you end up making mistakes, that's when things go wrong," he said.

"A lot of them are aware of that and say, 'We don't really want to do that again. Next time, let's be a little more organised, let's be a little more proactive, let's not run into that wall'," he said, adding that these companies want to move well ahead of support ending for Windows 7 in January 2020.

The other force driving businesses to make the switch will be the rise of convertible PCs, machines which can switch between being a tablet and a laptop, such as the Microsoft Surface. These devices can take advantage of Windows 10's ability to adapts its interface to suit both mouse-keyboard and touchscreen controls.

"A lot of enterprises have some internal demand for some of these new cool devices. To meet that you either go with Windows 8, and deal with the whole set of issues that surround it, or you can just go with Windows 10, which looks like those issues are addressed."

But not everyone agrees that upgrading will be a priority for businesses. Richard Edwards, principal research analyst for enterprise productivity and mobility at Ovum, said: "Clearly, there's knowledge of Windows 10 within corporate and enterprise IT departments. But we've not heard from any of our enterprise customers just yet that they have plans to roll out Windows 10 any time soon."

Here is a rundown of the key Windows 10 Enterprise edition features that Microsoft is hoping will persuade businesses to make the switch.
Windows 10's new enterprise features
Enterprise Data Protection

Windows 10's Enterprise Data Protection features, which are to be added to Windows 10 Enterprise at a later date, are designed to help prevent the accidental disclosure of sensitive information.

The system will use containerisation file techniques to keep personal and enterprise data separate - with "minimal" impact on the way employees work, according to Microsoft.

Additional safeguards will protect sensitive data when it is shared.

"It's encrypting data as it moves around your organisation. If you send an email to the wrong person, with the wrong file attached and it escapes your organisation, it's not going to be readable, it's going to be encrypted. But someone inside your organisation would have no problem reading it," Gartner's Kleynhans said.

Microsoft has also highlighted Windows 10's ability to wipe corporate data from devices and leave personal data untouched, as well as to use audit reports for tracking issues and remedial actions. It will also be able to be used with a mobile device management (MDM) system to protect corporate data inside Office universal apps.
Device Guard

This feature allows devices to be restricted to running only trusted software - whether it's traditional desktop, Windows store or in-house apps.

It also makes it "much less likely", according to Microsoft, that an attacker who seizes control of the Windows kernel will be able to run malicious code.

Device Guard uses the new virtualization-based security in Windows 10 Enterprise to isolate the Code Integrity service that controls the process from the Microsoft Windows kernel itself, letting the service use signatures defined by enterprise-controlled policy to determine what is trustworthy.

"You can lock the operating system to that piece of hardware, and nothing else could ever boot on that piece of hardware," Gartner's Kleynhans said.

"You can make it so that it would be very hard, if not impossible, to wipe and reload a machine with something else."

Microsoft says this whitelisting approach will be effective in stopping malware from being run on machines, particularly software that alters its code to prevent detection by anti-virus software. Using technology embedded in the hardware and virtualization to sandbox the Code Integrity service will also help foil exploits that compromise Windows at the kernel level, and which can tamper with traditional virus and malware countermeasures.

Device Guard requires various hardware features and software settings: UEFI 2.3.1 or greater; Virtualization Extensions such as Intel VT-x, AMD-V, and SLAT must be enabled; x64 version of Windows; IOMMU, such as Intel VT-d, AMD-Vi; TPM 2.0; BIOS lockdown.

HP, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, Fujitsu and others will manufacture systems designed for the new Microsoft security controls.
Provisioning packages

This feature allows Window 10 machines to be set up more simply than earlier versions of the OS.

IT admins can configure provisioning-package rules that determine the look of the OS, what apps and certificates should be installed, that enroll devices with an MDM suite, set out user rights and more.

The same provisioning-package rules can be used to configure multiple machines and can be applied to either a Windows image or running Windows machine via SD card, USB drive or network share.

Packages are created using the Imaging and Configuration Designer, part of the new Windows 10 Assessment and Deployment Kit.
Microsoft Passport

Microsoft Passport provides a system for allowing users to log into Windows 10 using biometrics, such as their fingerprint or facial scan or PIN.

This same scan or PIN can then be used to log into Microsoft, Active Directory or Azure Active Directory accounts, as well as many non-Microsoft services that support Fast ID Online authentication - including Office365 Exchange Online, Salesforce, Citrix, Box and Concur.

Microsoft says Passport provides both convenience, in that the user has to remember fewer credentials, and security, because no passwords are used.
Credential Guard

Credential Guard will offer additional security for login details by storing derived credentials - NTLM hashes and Kerberos tickets and the process that manages them in a secured isolated container that uses Hyper-V and virtualization-based security.

It will require UEFI 2.3.1 or greater; Virtualization Extensions such as Intel VT-x, AMD-V, and SLAT must be enabled; x64 version of Windows; IOMMU, such as Intel VT-d, AMD-Vi; TPM 2.0; BIOS.
Deployment features
Sideloading apps

Sideloading allows certain Windows Store apps, which firms don't want to publish and make publicly available, to be installed on Windows machines.

This practice of sideloading is useful when a firm wants to deploy line-of-business apps internally. Sideloading is a built-in capability with Windows 10 for Home, Pro and Enterprise users.

"If an organisation is developing its own set of corporate apps that it wishes to push out to employees, clearly there is some inherent business value in Windows 10," said Ovum's Edwards.
Mobile Device Management

Phones, tablets and other devices running Windows 10 can be centrally managed by IT. Windows 10 machines can connect to a Mobile Device Management (MDM) server that will enroll and configure the devices, as well as applying updates and enforcing the latest in-house policies governing usage.

An MDM package can be used both to manage Windows 10 phones as well as desktop PCs and laptops - allowing IT pros to use the same tools to look after fixed and mobile devices. Microsoft's own MDM offering, Intune, or a third-party alternative, can be used.

There are various new MDM features in Windows 10. Azure Active Directory integration allows MDM tools to be used to manage network Domain-joined devices. MDM services can also be used to install apps directly from the Windows Store and to deploy non-store line-of-business apps.

New device management options include the ability to update policies automatically, retrieve device compliance information and to specify a per-device update approval list.

Microsoft is also promising improved support for managing multiple users and VPN configuration.

Windows 10 allows users and devices to be managed by various services, providing a choice between Active Directory, Group Policy, and System Center Configuration Manager for corporate-owned devices that are frequently connected to the corporate network, or Azure Active Directory and MDM for devices that are typically mobile and internet-connected.

"What we see here are elements of the desktop operating system being managed with MDM-like capabilities and/or with Group Policy, which has been the traditional manner of controlling and managing desktops. Microsoft suggests they are very complementary," said Ovum's Edwards.
Business Store for Windows 10

Microsoft is planning to launch Windows Store for Business, an app store designed to make it easier for firms to deploy apps to staff.

Organisations will be able to create private sections of the Windows Store that offer a bespoke list of pre-approved apps, and admins will be able to assign apps to specific employees.

Businesses will also be able to acquire apps in bulk. Users will sign in via the Azure Active Directory.
Azure Active Directory features

Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is Microsoft's multi-tenant, cloud-based directory and identity management service that provides single sign-on access to thousands of SaaS applications such as Office365, Salesforce.com, DropBox, and Concur.

Microsoft is integrating Azure AD with Windows more deeply to reduce the amount of passwords users need to remember. By linking Windows 10 devices to Azure AD, users will be able to sign into Windows using their Azure AD account and password. The same devices can be automatically enrolled in a mobile device management service at the same time.

Users will also be able to gain single sign-on access to in-house services from personal Windows devices by linking that Windows machine to a work account managed with Azure Active Directory.
Free access to Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack

The Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) is a suite of technologies previously available as a subscription to Microsoft Software Assurance customers.

It is designed to help enterprises set up and run virtual Windows desktops and applications, to manage Windows users with features such as encryption and to recover systems more rapidly.

From the launch of Windows 10, MDOP is included free with Software Assurance for new customers and renewal customers.
Update paths
Current branch for Business

For work devices that are not mission-critical but which require a bit more control over updates than consumer machines, there is the Current branch for Business (CBB) update path. This option allows PCs to receive feature updates several months after they have been pushed to consumer versions of Windows 10, allowing additional time to validate their quality and application compatibility. Security updates will be delivered as normal.

CBB will allow users to choose between Windows Update, Windows Update for Business or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to push these updates to users.
Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB)

Unlike other Windows 10 versions, Enterprise will offer a Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB), which allows Windows updates, not related to security or fixes, to be deferred for 10 years.

Ovum's Edwards said the ability to use the LTSB and CBB update model on different machines is appealing to businesses.

"Some of our clients have responded to this model very positively. They think it gives them a kind of flexibility they've not really felt as though they've had in the past."
Other features
Granular UX Control

This feature allows IT managers to customize and lock down the user interface of a Windows device to restrict the machine to performing a specific task, such as acting as a check-in kiosk at an airport.
Enterprise Mode Internet Explorer

Old corporate intranet sites will often not render or behave as intended in more recent browsers.

To address this Internet Explorer (IE) 11, which ships with Windows 10, has Enterprise mode - which provides an experience more akin to IE8. It allows newer browser features that could cause errors to be disabled, such as tab-switching, and provides tools for management and monitoring of compatibility.
Device encryption

As in Windows 8.1, if Device Encryption is enabled, all a machine's drives are automatically encrypted and can only be unlocked by someone who knows the user account's password.

Basing encryption on the password is designed to make it both simple for users to log in and use the system, while stopping a malicious third party from accessing the data.

Device Encryption used BitLocker and 128-bit AES symmetric encryption. It also supports a recovery mechanism whereby the recovery key can be stored in an organization's Active Directory Domain Services.
Group policy management

Like earlier Windows operating systems, Windows 10 physical and virtual machines and devices can be managed using Group Policy settings, which allow IT professionals to configure user and computers across the business. Microsoft says Group Policy settings offer more that 30,000 ways to configure machines and devices.

Windows 10 adds new features and settings that can be managed using Group Policy - such as about 20 settings related to Microsoft's new Edge browser, the ability to restrict a user's application data to always stay on system volumes and to disable the deployment of Windows Store apps to non-system volumes. There will also be various options for customising the Start Menu layout.
BitLocker

BitLocker allows drives to be encrypted with 128-bit or 256-bit encryption, to protect data should the computer be lost or stolen.

While guarding data against access by third parties, BitLocker also provides tools that allow network admins to access a recovery key to retrieve data from a drive when a machine fails.
Assigned Access 8.1

This feature allows Windows 10 to be set up to only run a single Windows Store app in fullscreen mode, barring access to settings or the ability to quit that app.

It is designed to allow the OS to be run on a kiosk or self-service terminal, where you only want users to access the kiosk app and not the OS underneath. It requires support for InstantGo.
Remote Desktop

As the name suggests, the Remote Desktop client allows the operating system to connect to a remote PC and access its files, applications and networked devices.
Direct Access

DirectAccess allows desktop PCs to connect to a server to access in-house systems without the need for a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Windows to Go

Also found on Windows 8 Enterprise edition, Windows to Go allows for the creation of a bootable desktop image identical to the one the business uses to set up its PCs.

Users can then boot into this desktop from USB on any PC that meets Windows 7 or later certification requirements.

There are some differences between a Windows To Go workspace and a standard Windows desktop, including not being able to access the machine's internal drives.
AppLocker

Present in from Windows 7 onwards, AppLocker allows admins to specify which users or groups can run particular applications, based on the unique identities of files. Rules can also be created to control which versions of software are used within the business.
BranchCache

Also a fixture since Windows 7, BranchCache allows for the creation of local caches of information that is stored on a remote server. The information is usually cached on a local server but can also be stored on a Windows 7, 8 or 10 machine. The feature is designed to make it easier to access information and reduce strain on a Wide Area Network.

How to Reset Microsoft Edge in Windows 10

Microsoft Edge is still in its early days, and occasionally, problems can arise. If you find that Edge is experiencing slow performance, crashes, or the weird appearance of adware, toolbar, or popups, then you may have to reset Microsoft Edge.

Resetting Microsoft Edge is not like resetting other browsers, however. Edge is a part of the Windows operating system, and cannot be uninstalled. There are different ways to tackle this problem, but you should try the basic methods first.

Reset Microsoft Edge Through Its Settings
Open the “Settings” menu by clicking the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner of the Edge window and choose “Settings.”

Under Clear browsing data, click “Choose what to clear” and then click “Show more.” There are a lot of data types here. Select them all and click “Clear.” Restart your PC and re-open Edge for a clean slate.

Repair Microsoft Edge Through System File Checker

Microsoft Edge is a core component of Windows 10, not a separate app. If the error is caused by file corruption or something similar, Windows’ System File Checker tool (sfc.exe) might be able to fix the problem. You can run a full system scan with the System File Checker by right-clicking the Start menu, selecting “Command Prompt (Admin)”, and running the following command:

sfc /scannow
For more information on running System File Checker commands, check out our guide on the subject. If the SFC command fails to fix the problem, then try the more advanced DISM command or System Update Readiness Tool described in our guide. Restart your PC and hopefully Microsoft Edge should work properly.

Reset Microsoft Edge Through PowerShell
If the above methods don’t work for you, you may have to go nuclear. This PowerShell command will delete and re-register the core data of Microsoft Edge. Make sure you perform a full backup and/or create a system restore point before continuing in case anything goes wrong. This is very important, and do not continue before creating a backup!

First, navigate to the following folder and clear everything inside it:

C:\Users\%username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
(Replace %username with your own username.)

Next, right-click on the Start menu and choose “Windows PowerShell (Admin)”. Copy and paste the following code inside PowerShell and press Enter:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}
If the process was completed successfully, you should see a message like this:

When you open Microsoft Edge next time, you will see that it has been reset to default. If you encounter any error, type the following command to get the first few logged events:

Get-Appxlog | Out-GridView
Note the error code in the log and proceed with the following link from MSDN knowledgebase.

Microsoft Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education,What is the difference? How to choose?

Microsoft had already provided a rough outline of the differences between these versions.

All four feature the new Windows Start Menu and Edge web browser, Cortana personal assistant software, support for new security features including facial and fingerprint recognition, virtual desktop support, and continuum mode for seamlessly transitioning from PC to tablet mode when you detach a keyboard from a tablet.

Things look a little different when you check out the business features. Windows 10 Home doesn’t support BitLocker encryption, Windows Remote Desktop, Group Policy Management, Enterprise Data Protection, or some other features that require Windows 10 Pro or higher.

Meanwhile Enterprise users get some features that aren’t available for Windows 10 Pro, including AppLocker, Windows To Go Creator, Credential Guard, and Device Guard.

For the most part Windows 10 Education is the same as Windows 10 Enterprise… it’s just meant for use in a school environment rather than a business.

One feature that’s only available to Windows 10 Enterprise uses is “Long Term Servicing Branch,” which basically means that enterprise customers can postpone Windows updates that provide new features for years, while continuing to receive security updates.

While upgrading to Windows 10 will net you some new features, you’ll also lose some things that were available in earlier versions of Windows. Native support for DVD playback is no longer supported, but you’ll be able to install third-party video players that can handle it. Windows Media Center isn’t available for Windows 10.

How to Activate Windows key 10 and resolve issues in Windows 10

Product Activation was first introduced into the Windows family with the release of Windows XP in 2001. Activation pairs your product key with your computer. It is also used as a mechanism for copy protection in addition to defining support rights depending on the product channel from which the software was acquired: Retail, OEM, Volume License, Trial. With Windows 10, Microsoft has made huge announcements regarding product distribution. The most notable being that Windows 10 will be free to existing Windows 7, 8/8.1 users for the first year. Regardless of this, product activation remains a part of Windows 10. In this article, we take a look at product activation and troubleshooting steps.

Details
Things you should know:
A Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product keycannot activate Windows 10. Windows 10 uses its own unique product key.
By default, Windows 10 builds are pre-keyed, meaning, you do not have to enter a product key and should not be prompted to enter one as long as you upgraded from an activated Windows 7 or Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 license or Windows 10 Preview build.
If you perform a clean install on first attempt, you will have to start over from an activated Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 installation.
If you are prompted to enter a product key, clickDo this laterand give it a few days, Windows 10 will activate automatically.
Activation servers are being overwhelmedat the moment because of the volume of upgrades, so give it some time if you get an error message such as (0XC004E003, ,0x8007000D, 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B) Windows 10 will eventually activate as long as you upgrade using the appropriate method.
There is no need to know your Windows 10 product key, read the following 'Understanding Product Activation in Windows 10:
Understanding Product Activation in Windows 10:
In previous Windows releases, when you installed an upgrade version of Windows, if you wanted to reinstall the upgrade version, you had to first reinstall the qualifying version from which you upgraded, reactivate it, then upgrade again and reactivate again.
With Windows 10, this is no longer the case. Once you have upgraded to Windows 10 and activate, you can simply create a bootable copy on DVD or USB and reinstall just Windows 10 without the need to reinstall the qualifying version and it will reactivate automatically.

"Windows 10 handles keys differently. When you upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update from Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, the process registers your computers hardware, and qualifying OS with a Microsoft Product Activation Server. The device is then considered a Windows 10 device.
Subsequently anytime you re-install (or clean install) the installation checks with those servers, finds the unique installation ID and produces the validation"

Important Note to persons installing build Windows 10 10240
In order to activate Windows 10 build 10240 (RTM), you must upgrade from a previous qualifying operating system that is genuine and activated: this includes Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 Insider Previews.
If you are running the Windows 10 Enterprise Preview, you either need to stay in the Windows 10 Insider Preview Program or activate using a product key from the Volume License Service Center (VLSC) when it becomes available in August. If you are not eligible to be running Windows 10 Enterprise, I suggest you make preparations to rollback the original version of Windows your system was licensed for and make a reservation to upgrade to Windows 10.

Can I perform a clean install using the Free upgrade?
No, it will require that you are running a previous qualifying version and start the upgrade from within the qualifying version. You can initiate a clean install after completing the Upgrade.
Please be aware that you cannot use the free upgrade offer to perform a clean install on first attempt. You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the .ISO file). Ensure the upgrade is completed successfully and then ensure that it is activated. You can then proceed to do a clean install by using recovery media or using the Reset function in Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC (Get Started).
To find out which edition of Windows 10 you are running, see the following article:
How to know the Edition, Architecture, Channel and build of Windows 10 installed.
If Windows does not activate.
If Windows 10 does not activate even after detecting an active Internet Connection, restart and try again. Or wait a few days and Windows 10 should automatically activate itself.
I downloaded the .ISO file but Windows 10 setup is prompting me for a product key or indicates the product key does not work with this edition.

Please note: The copy of Windows 10 you download must correspond with the edition of Windows you are upgrading from:
Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core must use a Windows 10 Home ISO
Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro must use a Windows 10 Pro ISO
Your currently installed copy of Windows must be activated. If it is not, you will be prompted to enter a product key.
If you are using Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8.0 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Enterprise editions, or volume license Windows 7 Professional you won't be able to use the free upgrade offer.
I upgraded from a activated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 then I decided to reinstall using either the .ISO file, Reset this PC or Recovery drive, but I am prompted to enter a product key:
ImageClick Do this later
Windows 10 will automatically re-activate within a few days.
I just installed or reinstalled a preview build of Windows 10 and I want to upgrade to the final release, but it will not activate.
Microsoft has suspended Preview Builds and also deactivated their product keys at this time. This means you won't be able to download, install or activate builds 10162 and 10166 or earlier builds in order to qualify for the final release.
Your best option is to reinstall a valid license you have for either Windows 7, Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1, make sure it is actvated, then upgrade from that to Windows 10 on July 29th or later.

Why you can't find your product key after upgrading to Windows 10

With Windows 10, Microsoft is doing away with the conventional product key for digital installs. You may never have to manage product keys again.

windows 8 setup product key

A funny thing happens when you look for a product key in Windows 10 after doing the free upgrade: You won’t find them.
www.officialkeystore.com

In Windows 10, utilities like Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder or Belarc Advisor return generic product keys instead of authentic ones. Don’t believe me? This is the key Windows 10 Pro users will see in KeyFinder or Belarc Advisor: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T.

Let’s try this PowerShell script from the Hexus forums on Windows 10 Pro. You should get this: T44CG-JDJH7-VJ2WF-DY4X9-HCFC6. That’s the generic key for build 10240.

Not a real product key to be seen anywhere.

The reason for this is that Windows 10 changes Microsoft’s traditional product key model, and if you ask me it’s for the better.

Entitlements, not product keys
When you use the free upgrade to Windows 10 or pay for a digital retail version, you don’t get a product key. Instead, your computer uses what Microsoft calls a digital entitlement.

“Upon upgrading to Windows 10, the activation state from a prior version of Windows (be it Windows 7, Windows 8 or a prior build of Windows 10) is seamlessly carried over,” a Microsoft spokesperson told PCWorld. “Once activated, a digital entitlement for your PC’s hardware is created in the Windows 10 activation service. This entitlement can be used by the same PC again for re-activation of the same Edition of Windows 10 in the future.”

It looks like the product key is on its way out, at least as far as users are concerned. After installation, your version of Windows 10 should just activate in the background in a few moments or a few days at the most. You can check your activation status by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

Clean installs all the way down
Once your Windows 10 upgrade activates, you can grab a Windows 10 install image, do a clean install, skip the screen asking for product keys, and you should just re-activate again after the install is complete. I say should, because even in this brave new world without product keys I find it hard to believe there won’t be a few installation horror stories involving product activation.

That said, I can vouch from personal experience that a post-upgrade clean install of Windows 10 just works. Shortly after I installed Windows 10 on my laptop, I swapped out my old spinning hard drive for an SSD. When I was done with the installation Windows activated right away.

For longtime Windows users the absence of product keys in Windows 10 digital installs is a relief and at the same time a little worrying. Based on the long history of activation horror stories, some of you out there may be a little suspicious of this new process. Although the notion of never having to use a product key ever again sounds great.

Well, almost...
There are still situations where you’ll run into product keys with Windows 10. If you buy a physical retail edition such as on a USB stick or DVD, you’ll still get a product key. Microsoft told us that “your activation product key stays with your PC.” We’re not clear if that means product keys work as digital entitlements, or whether you’ll be managing product keys the old fashioned way—by stashing that product key somewhere safe for later use. We’re double-checking this with Microsoft and will update this article should the company respond.

One sticking point with digital entitlements is that because it’s dependent on your hardware configuration, making a significant change can wipe out the entitlement. If you swap out your motherboard, for example, your digital entitlement will likely disappear and Windows 10 won’t activate. If that happens, you’ll have to make a call to Microsoft’s customer support line to re-activate your copy of Windows.

Keep in mind we’re talking significant hardware changes here. If you swap out your hard drive for an SSD or add more RAM, you shouldn’t see any problems.

I don’t know about you, but if I ever have to look at a product key again it’ll be too soon. Windows 10 product key facebook
